Two below at 5 a.m. (updated at 7 p.m.)

Front porch thermometer said it was negative 1.4 degrees at 4 a.m. and and an hour later it had dropped to 2 below zero.

I think we're in for a real Missouri Ozarks winter this year. Look out; February is coming.

You Califoreigners and others who log on here regularly to dream of a quiet, rural life in the Ozarks: Are you really sure you want to move here?

Headed off to work. Look for an update and more commentary this afternoon. While you're here on the Ozarks Almanac, take a look around. Check the index to the left; there's bound to be something of interest to you.

Update at 7 p.m.: Well, one of the deacons called and said they've already called off prayer meeting for Wednesday night out at Macedonia. The weather service is calling for 2-5 inches of snow starting Wednesday afternoon.

Weather Underground's website shows it got up to 21 degrees today out at the airport. I don't think it was that warm here at the house. It's 14.9 degrees on the porch now.

Despite the cold, it was really a beautiful winter day in the Missouri Ozarks. The sun was out so it didn't feel as cold as it really was--as long as you were bundled well and didn't stay outside long.

Records for this date: 71 in 1956 and minus-7 in 1959.
